How to Help Your Children Focus at Home

Written by Will Capulong | 24 August 2020

More and more parents are facing difficulties in making their children focus on their studies and other activities, especially at home. It appears that children’s focus gets shorter as the digital age continues. This hinders children from having more physical activities that affect not only their focus but their social skills as well.

Children these days are easily distracted by gadgets and the internet. Others may think it’s normal for their children to crave more screen time and sadly, some parents give in to their child’s demands. Some assume that the only way to appease a child throwing a tantrum is to let them use a smartphone or tablet.

What they do not know is that this practice damages behavior disrupts self-regulation, and breaks mental focus among children.

Ways You Can Help Your Children Focus at Home

It is not magic that can help your child sustain his/her ability to focus and shift attention only when necessary.

It has been observed that children from this generation tend to be more impatient, unfocused, and angry. If you want to increase your child’s potential with the things they are good at, get them more focused by using these simple tips at home.

Limit their screentime.

Being exposed to excessive gadget exposures, can lead to a delay in speech development, cause mild autism, and even make children more impatient. This is especially so in children between the ages of one to four, when their brains are still developing.

Thus, limiting your child’s screen time is beneficial for their brain development. Instead of giving them what they want, parents must help them realize that using gadgets excessively is bad for their health.

As you can, encourage them to limit screen time to educational shows or games that could help develop their brains such as Neeuro's Memorie app. This particular app trains children's learning abilities by zeroing in on key skills like focus, memory, decision making, and spatial ability.

Fun games in Memorie, such as “Sushi Recall”, helps children pay attention to items on the plate before they disappear. The child then needs to use his working memory to remember the item and provide the correct answer. In the same way, the game, “What's this Word?”, also trains children to focus on the shapes of the word being displayed on the screen and guess what the actual word is. This helps children to not just understand shapes better but also to understand words easily as well.

Entice them to non-digital games.

Let them have fun with non-digital games, such as board games, blocks, or jigsaw puzzles.

These games require children’s focus and their bodies become more involved since they have to watch out for their turns, clap, laugh, and bond with others. Such games are also proven to increase brain activity which creates a domino effect where the different brain functions are developed at the same time.

Soon, you will notice how your child’s behavior becomes better - including the child’s focus on tasks and studies.

Exercise self-regulation.

Introduce your kids to self-regulation which involves focus, competence, self-control, and social behavior.

Try to assign a task to your child at home like setting up the table, putting out toys, counting fruits, or arranging the pillows. Observe how fast they finish the task without getting distracted.

Simple activities like this will make them question where they should put specific things, which things to be placed together inside the box, and more. Let them do activities that require patience, organizing skills, and creativity.
